Jesus indeed has setting the captives free as part of his job description. Oppression.... but it's sin oppression... Activist scholar perhaps, but to clarify, Cornel West is an example of a liberation theology view. That is where Jesus became a figure of deliverance form political opression. Isaiah 53 becomes a struggle against oppression not a deliverance form sin and yet the normal works of the Bible are 'Christ died for our sins" and Isaiah 54 has an eternal covenant of peace ushered in. Justice and mercy are a byproduct of salvation not salvation itself. . Biblically problematic but that is the bend of Union Seminary where West and Warnock were form so I understand where he's coming from. It's not a Biblical world view.
